Rides: Linda
Garcia coordinated a fun ride, I think we had 18, the ferry rides were a
new experience for most. Thanks! The second ride which was a novice ride
without novice riders to the Empire Mine turned into a fun picnic and tour
of the mine and grounds, we had 10 riders. Upcoming
Rides: June
14th – Dolly – stay tuned to the website for the route.
Dolly presented an idea to go on a Poker Run. After discussion we voted as
a club that it wasn’t an appropriate route for a club ride, it had cost
involved and could subject our riders to unsafe conditions; e.g. crowds,
unknown riding ability etc. Dolly has another route in mind and will have
it posted on the website by the 1st. July
12th ride – Many of us will be returning from the Ride In on
this date. Ann Batey stepped
up to the plate and offered to coordinate a ride. Thanks Ann.
Badge/Plaque: The
second round and corrections of a couple of the badges will be available
at the June meeting. Shirts: A list with club shirt orders received to
that date was sent around. Members were asked to check their order or add
to the list if they haven’t ordered. To date there are 41 shirt orders.
The price of the tee shirt was on the forms I sent around but remember the
cost of the printing is $7.60 per shirt in addition to the cost of the
shirt. I will have the tee shirts at the June meeting. I would appreciate
everyone bringing their money to the June meeting. I am willing to lay out
the $600.00 to get them but honestly can’t afford to be buying anyone
their riding apparel. If you think you won’t be at the June meeting
please call or email me for a check amount and pickup arrangements. Announcements: Women on Wheels has developed a new Code of Conduct. The 10 rules to live by were read at the meeting. There are provisions in the new rules to suspend or revoke membership if violations of the Code of Conduct are committed. They also provide for a chain of command on all complaint issues. A member of the Winddancers sent an email inviting us to their ride and presentation at the factory of Arlen Ness. It is on June 22nd. Call me if you want specifics. Presentation on Hot weather ridi We had an awesome presentation by Sue C.
& Melinda on hot weather riding. An article was handed out about how
to care for yourself during hot weather riding, Do’s & Don’ts, a
description of what really takes place with your body when it is trying to
cool itself and how riding in short sleeve doesn’t allow your natural
cooling system to work. The perspiration with air moving over it helps to
cool you but if you are riding it evaporates and your body thinks it just
needs to keep perspiring, you’ll do this until you dehydrate and worse
body conditions result. They brought and explained different types of
hydration systems, cool vests, cool riding jackets, and ice chests.
Discussion about food types and fluid types that are good and bad for you
were discussed also. The article was great, if anybody needs one let me
know. Thanks Sue & Melinda! July Meeting: Reminded members that Amy Holland the
editor of Friction Zone will be at our July meeting, don’t miss it. She
will be talking on a variety of safety issues. Social Outing: Janet D. asked recently if the club had an
interest in doing something social whether on bikes or not but get
together as a club and “go out”. There was enough interest so she
checked into going as a group to the play “6 Women Brain Dead” on July
18th at 8pm for $16 each. It was an overwhelming yes so she is
checking out the fine details and will firm things up at the June meeting. Demonstration of ABS Brakes & Other Safety Aspects of Riding: Compliments of Mike Zinda of A&S and Chuck Downing, ret. CHP. This presentation was awesome. I’m really sorry any of you ever missed this chance to witness in person up close and personal the magic of ABS brakes and the detailed description of how they work along with tons of other great information. I was too enthralled with the whole thing to take notes so sorry about that. We went to Del Campo high school parking lot because we needed a big space. After lots of discussion and question answering by Mike and Chuck, Chuck took 3 drivebys at 60 mph, first showing us the stopping distance with rear brake only fully engaged, then with front brake only fully engaged, and finally with both front and rear brakes fully engaged. To say the least the rear brake only was the longest stop, one third the distance of the stop was shaved off with the front brake only stop and the distance then cut in half with both brakes engaged. Amazing! We stayed out there till way after dark talking and discussing. |
